A Partner in Ironwork, Preservation, and Architectural Vision

Whisonant Preservation & Iron brings over a decade of specialized experience in architectural metalwork, focused on historic preservation, design integration, and architectural fabrication. We work hand-in-hand with architects, preservationists, and designers to support legacy restoration and design-forward construction across the United States and Europe.

Founder Joe Whisonant holds a degree in Architectural Ironworking from the American College of the Building Arts, where he was awarded the Phillip Simmons Award for excellence in craft. He continued advanced training in France at the Fondation Coubertin, earning a Matrise d’Arts et Techniques in Metalworking and receiving certification through the Compagnon du Devoir to design and fabricate traditional French ironwork — a distinction held by very few in North America.

Project experience includes:

  • Notre Dame (Paris)

  • Palace of Versailles

  • Château de Villepreux

  • Colonial Williamsburg

  • Drayton Hall

  • Residential and commercial work across the U.S. and Europe

Joe’s work has been featured on PBS NewsHour, This Old House, Charleston Home and Design Magazine, and the Architectural Digest Podcast. He also shares educational content on Instagram to help preserve and communicate the discipline behind high-level architectural metalwork.
